Written by a soldier at Camp Pike Arkansas. His address says he was in the 345th Infantry. From the letter……………We arrived here in safety. Left Camp Grant at 9:30 Sat. morning and arrived here today Sun. at 2:30 P.M. We went down through Chicago, then down through the state of Kentucky, Tennessee, then into Arkansas. The nearest town is Little Rock about six miles……..the population is over half negroes in Arkansas…….We sure saw some country coming down I never thought I’d see the cotton fields of the south……..We are in the Infantry but don’t know yet, we maybe transferred to the Infantry or Machine Gun Corps, or remain in the Artillery……..I heard some news tonight. I hear all the men who are sent here are not quite sound, and are given a strict examination. If they don’t pass they are sent home and if they do pass they will stay in this country and act as National Guard and will never have to go across…….I’d believe I’d take my chances guarding along the Mexican Border in preference to going across don’t you think so?
