This letter was written after WW1 to a lady concerning the death of her husband, who was killed in action, by a man  who served with him. From the letter...........

.....Yet it is all sad. Yes he was often speaking of his wife to me. I was the Sergeant who was called sky pilot so perhaps you heard of it........I do feel sorry for you and his mother and father. O yes and the dear little boy.....and I notice he has sisters and a grandmother. O this war has left lots of sad homes I know, and how often I think of it.
Yes it was a hard afternoon when I stood at head of 61 graves and read John 14, then when I came to the 19th verse I broke down. It said, "yet a little while and we are no more". Well I got my self together and finished my commiting(?) of the bodies. Sgt. Hubert was first one layed to rest then the rest was put in. There was no chance after that to bury any more. I understand now that the bodies have been taken up and put in a new american grave yard. and if you want the body home, even though you can not see it, Uncle Sam shall arange for you to have it........Mr. Hubert was killled July 15, 1918 between 7 and 8 oclock AM and from shell not shot, so this alone shall show you that he did not suffer........

Other Periods
WWI

Written by a Navy man at the U.S. Naval Academy, at Annapolis, Maryland, in 1936. From the letter.........After a month’s leave (three weeks at home and a week traveling to and from California). I am about ready to settle down to the more serious aspects of the Navy. For instance, the plebes must be braced up, and secondly, there are studies, of course……. The football team opened it’s season with an 18-6 win over William and Mary. How far the gang will go remains to be seen, but we all have our hopes this year. Two more easy games before we meet the test………I want to thank you again for the entertainment. Remember me to your mother and father………
